Handling Common Dental Emergencies

Until your appointment time, there are some simple tips that can lessen the impact of your dental emergency:

  • Knocked-out tooth – If you’ve been injured in sport or have had another form of impact, there is some simple advice to follow. If the tooth must be cleansed, rinse it with milk or saliva. Then, place it back into the socket. Handle the tooth by touching only the upper end, or crown. Do not touch the root of the tooth.
  • Toothache – If you have a pain in the tooth, it has likely been present for some time. If it’s suddenly worsened, or if it’s something you’ve recently noticed, it’s best to have it looked at straightaway. You can apply cold compresses to the outside of the cheek near the affected area, rinse with salt water and take over-the-counter pain medications.
  • Broken crown – If your crown has fallen out, we recommend that you retrieve it and gently clean it with milk or saliva. It’s best to place it back on top of the tooth that was covered by the crown. Left without the extra measure of protection, your tooth is susceptible to extreme damage.
